Courts Allow Change Of Childs Surname

A recent ruling has allowed a mother to change her children’s surnames, contrary to the accepted view that a child should retain the surname given to them at birth. The facts of the case were exceptional, in that the change of surname was to protect the children viewing or learning of the existence of a blog written by the father, detailing leaked court and intimate medical reports in respect of one of the children, and extremely sensitive information about the children’s mother.  It seems that this is a move further towards allowing a change of name where the balance of harm to the child outweighs the need to maintain the link to the paternal family.
